Yeah, Brendan007, I agree with you to an extent. Aussie dramas are hard to watch (I'm being polite here). The acting tends to be sloppy, but then the actors don't really have much to work with because the scripts are so poorly written. It appears to me that the same half a dozen people write these shows and they keep getting regular gigs. And when they try to do something that they think is cutting edge like "Stingers", it just comes across as an attempt to copy something that the Americans do so easily.
As for watching 12 people sit in a house and do nothing, well if they had a little bit of charisma, then it would be a pleasant way to spend an hour. However, I can't sit and watch a bunch of people who, if I'd met their type at a party, I would probably find some excuse to leave.
I agree that TV is about entertainment. You said that if I want to be a screenwriter, I should remember that.
And that is my point; I, and others like me who want to write scripts, don't get the chance to do so because our TV screens are filled with 'real' people doing and saying real things...and it's as boring as all hell.
We are Bond fans because it's a fantasy world that's portrayed on the screen. If Bond were more true to life, then Bond would probably be balding, driving a 1985 Ford Escort and battling budget cuts at MI6 rather than crazy, world-domination types who employ evil henchmen with metal teeth and razor-edged bowler hats. As for his licence to kill..."good God, man, have you taken leave of your senses!!??"
Sometimes, when I tell people that I want to write thrillers/action movies/Genre films, I get criticised for it; "Ah, why doncha write somefing that's more realistic and true to life, Vodka?"
Because I would love people to forget, for just a couple of hours, about their mortgages, nagging bosses and the parking ticket they got earlier that day.
If I want real life, I'll walk out my front door and live it rather than eavesdrop on somebody else's "reality".
I get where you're coming from, Brendan, and I respect your opinion. I just remember a time when there wasn't so much reality TV on the air. It wasn't so long ago. Hopefully, the bubble will burst soon and we'll start seeing actors on TV again.
And that's my rant, gang. I do go on, don't I?
