Every Bond fan knows Miss Moneypenny, M's secretary. But, does anyone know why she is called Moneypenny? Is Moneypenny her last name, first name, or nickname? I really want to know.

It's her surname.

I assumed it was her surname. But in the Brosnan Bond films Bond refers to her just as "Moneypenny", the "Miss" being dropped for one stupid reason or another. I didn't realise referring to a female just by her surname was common practise, certainly something I'd never do. I'm not challenging anyone to prove me wrong, I probably am, just doesn't feel right to me though.

I think Brosnan's Bond has taken on that affectionate stand on the name myself. Like she says James, he says Moneypenny. Of course, if we knew her first name he'd probably say that, but it's one of those things in the Bond world we'd probably never find out.

Well the actress, Lois Maxwell, who played Miss Moneypenny from Connery to Moore's Bond's is Canadian yes. But the character is. Nor are the subsequent actresses.

Oh...I must have heard Lois Maxwell was Canadian and assumed they were talking about the character, Moneypenny. Sorry.

How many different actresses have played Moneypenny? Lois Maxwell and Samantha Bond are the only two I know. But I know there was maybe a couple in the 80's that were not around very long.

Three. Lois Maxwell, Samantha Bond, and Timothy Dalton's Bond had the pleasure of Caroline Bliss.

Why was she a Dud ? She was not that bad to make that kind of impression . Or is just another attempt to beat up a Dalton/Bond . By attacking a supporting player .

I liked Caroline Bliss' portrayal of Moneypenny and was at
first dissapointed when I heard she was not going to reprise the
role in GE. But seeing Samantha Bond in that first scene in GE
made me a believer that she is a "perfect penny!"

I agree that Caroline Bliss was terrible. She played such a cliche -- big glasses, nerdy "taste" in music. She had no dignity.

Miss Moneypenny's first name has never been given. In one movie, Bond called her "Penny," but this nickname is based on her last name.

Was Caroline Bliss horrible? Or was the portrayal she was told to give the character horrible?

In defense of Caroline Bliss we will never know what type of Moneypenny she would have become . since the franchise was in "limbo" after LTK . Besides it was the later 1980's when see took over the role from Lois Maxwell who like Roger Moore was looking very long in the tooth. Samantha Bond has made the role her own . Yet she has the dignity and grace to say she will call it quits when Brosnan leaves.

Maybe if she would have been given a larger role in LTK than a mere 30 seconds we would of seen what she was capable of. Oh well. I liked her.

I think Bliss played an OK Moneypenny.
She looked good, but had too much of a 'schoolgirl' type crush on Bond wheras Maxwell had a more 'mature' crush on Bond and S. Bond likes to play the hard to get flirty taunt type.

They all had their time and I think in the scenes between Dalton and Bliss they were well suited to each other.
Lets face it, Maxwell was very 'past it' when she finally gave the role up, probably a new Bond (Moore) should have equalled a new Moneypenny, but never mind.

I loved Losi Maxwell all the Time, especially in OHMSS and AVTAK.
But since Samantha Bond entered this Role, i changed my opion.
In GE she was a little bit to feministic, like her chief too (LOL).
But i love especially her playing in TND. In that she is really cool, when she phones with Bond and in the Driving Scene.
