I'm guessing that, because of the livery, it's a Green Planet company car. I can't think of any other vehicle in Bolivia that might have livery on it beside a taxi, and since Bolivia is the poorest country in South America, I can't picture a taxi company running a fleet of brand new Ford Kas. Nor can I picture any taxi company running that kind of livery (then again, the ones in my home town have the town name spelt wrongly ...).

The car product placement is something that really does bug me. I don't mind the Aston Martin's - they fit. But the rest of the Ford portfolio is just irritating - Bond driving a Mondeo, the Ford car park in the Bahamas (I dare you to find a non-Ford car in that car park). It's all to obvious and too much.

There are non-Ford vehicles there -- after the fact. Ford announced this past week it's selling Jaguar and Land Rover to India's Tata Motors Ltd. EDIT: The company sold Aston Martin off last year. I'm not that concerned about what brand cars appear so long as they work for what they are used for in the film.
I hated the advert-style shot of the Ford Mondeo in Casino Royale. It got groans from everyone I knew who saw the film of the same quality as the "Omega" comment. ![]() ![]() "Impatiently Bond lit a cigarette, pulled his shoulders out of their slouch and slammed the mawkish memories back into their long-closed file. Did they really have to have that comment in the dialogue in order for Omega to allow them to use their watches? Seriously. Do they really have to do some zoom-in on the Ford badge on a car for Ford to allow them to use one of their crummy average cars in the film? Let's hope they stop that nonsense, it's unnecessary. Everyone I know could spot the Vaio laptops every time they were on screen and sometimes the shot wasn't even obvious at all. ![]() ![]() "Impatiently Bond lit a cigarette, pulled his shoulders out of their slouch and slammed the mawkish memories back into their long-closed file. It's ironic that one of the best (probably the best) Bond film of the past couple of decades should also have at least two of the most blatant product placements.

It's ironic that one of the best (probably the best) Bond film of the past couple of decades should also have at least two of the most blatant product placements. A bloody awful shame. Casino Royale was littered with often obvious product placement. It's worse when the products aren't even that classy like a Ford Mondeo too. ![]() ![]() "Impatiently Bond lit a cigarette, pulled his shoulders out of their slouch and slammed the mawkish memories back into their long-closed file. Why don't they sell it here?" Ford's CEO, Alan Mulally, has actually commented in public about this. (My job involves reporting about the company; I've heard him comment about this, specifically referencing Casino Royale.) He's trying to integrate Ford-North America, Ford of Europe, etc., so they share more parts. Also, the Mondeo in Casino Royale was a prototype. The company wasn't making that version yet (for sale). It is not "street legal." The production version didn't come out until later. |

They aren't bad mouthing the Rolex in CR though. You're right. In fact, the train dialogue works in Rolex's favor. Vesper assumes a man like Bond would wear a Rolex thus giving them a little bit of free (positive) advertising. ![]() |

Its good Bond fans are beginning to grow up abit.
It wasn't so long ago that when a fan complained about PP The Children would reply with: "What, you want him to use fake products?" The PP is a real problem with the current EON administration. It undermines the attempts by everyone else to create a gritty real world spy franchise. It especially jars with Craig's performance. I don't understand why EON go to all the trouble of casting DC, getting top notch stunts co-ordinators if they are going to pepper the movie with cheesy product references. The car park scene in CR, the Virgin adverts, Branson, the Omega reference, the obsession with the Sony logo, it stops CR being a truly classy experience. And to The Children who need things repeating in slightly more simple forms: I am not complaining about products appearing, I am complaining about the shoe horned insertion of visuals and script references to Products, the emphasis and the quantity placed on pushing products at the expense of character and tone. EON need to grow up a bit and realize their audience has too. This post has been edited by Broadsword: 2 April 2008 - 05:09 |

And yeah if anyone is familar with brand names the Ford brands were a bit blatant. But I did like the Mondeo...and not seen in the US so new to us. Kinda fits as a nice rental so whatever.... The worst IMO though is still way back in Live and Let Die when everyone in New York drove a Chevy Impala. ....unless you were a pimp then bring on the Caddy's This post has been edited by mcdonbb: 2 April 2008 - 05:47 |

Come to expect it, although I would hope that it's less blatantly part of the dialogue for the next film.
Still, it's been going on for years - KFC appears onscreen pretty prominently in Goldfinger and that's, like, really classy. ![]() ![]() "There was a violent cruelty, a pathological desire to wound, quite near the surface in the man." http://twitter.com/Jacquesstewart CBn: ...we have people everywhere Only James Bond is James Bond. |

CBn's news page on the pulse again! A mere 6 days after this thread was started!
As for product placement; I really couldn't care less. The Mondeo bit was the only one that really stuck out; I didn't even notice the Virgin planes the first time I saw it. And the Omega comment really doesn't upset (apart from the surprising pronunciation). We didn't even see the thing. It's an old defence but an apposite one: Fleming's books really were filled with brand names. |

That defence is often used here. But Fleming was writing in a different age. EON can't justify it along those lines. Fleming had all kinds of weird stuff in there that wouldn't cut it with a modern audience and EON have decided to eject from the franchise. They need to do the same with the 1960s approach to shoving new products down our necks. My favourite Fleming anachronism is JB's odd approach to health and fitness. It was straight out of the 1930s and in OHMSS, Fleming has him cutting down on the ciggies and doing a few push ups in readiness for the moutain escape. Craig was clearly more prepared. Do we think EON Is aware that people were actually groaning in Casino Royale? They can't be that stupid. I went 4 times and the Omega line got a stunted groans and tuts every time. The Mondeo advert bordered on the offensive. Bourne's PP was much more 21st century. The VW tie-in was well executed and they even bashed off the VW badge so it wasn't that obvious. Can you imagine Bond doing that? |
