Was Roger Moore the Best Actor Presenter at the Academy Awards in 1973? I think I saw a picture of the ceremony with him. If he was, what was his reply to the Native American Indian girl that Marlon Brando sent to refuse the award?

If he was, what was his reply to the Native American Indian girl that Marlon Brando sent to refuse the award? Yes, he and another woman, I'm not sure who. He didn't have a reply, just got a sort of befuddled look on his face when she brushed the award away. I saw it on an Oscars highlight tape I have. Roger also appeared other times including giving Cubby his Irving G. Thalberg Lifetime Achievement award in 1982 and also appeared with Connery and Michael Caine another year. That was very cool. He may have appeared other years as well, but I'm not positive about when. ![]() "You didn't think I'd miss this performance, did you?"

Thank you, Turn. I was curious. It must have been very cool to have Caine, Connery and Moore together.

Yes it was...Roger walked out and Caine asked him who he was.
Roger: My name's Bond, James Bond Caine: You're not Bond, he's Bond (gesturing to Connery) Roger: Oh, really? (looking at Connery) Connery: I know who he is, it's David Putnam [famous British film producer] Roger was sporting a beard at the time and so he looked a little like the well known British producer. ![]() ![]() Robert Brown was Admiral Hargreaves in TSWLM, OP, AVTAK, TLD and LTK damnit Enforcer, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Roger Moore Proud defender of Barbara Bach, Carole Bouquet, Barbara Carrera, Maryam D'Abo, A View to a Kill, Never Say Never Again and The Spy Who Loved Me. |

I recall watching an awards show one year when I was quite young (but not the '73 Oscars-might have been a year or two later, and it was either the Oscars or the Globes), and being completely puzzled when they announced "And now, James Bond" (or something to that effect) as Roger walked out to present an award. "What are they talking about?", I wondered. That's not James Bond!
A few years later, I was a big Roger Moore fan, but at the time I was rather shaken. This overly tan bloke with funky light brown hair was not cutting it! Looked more like Doc Savage. ![]() ![]() 'It reads better than it lives.' |

I also saw the Academy Awards with Sir Roger, Michael Caine and Connery. It was such a long time ago, I don't remember a lot about it, but thought it was great to see them all there. Unfortunately, I didn't see the RM one with Marlon Brando and that lady, but never mind. When RM presented Broccoli with the Thalberg award, that was good too.

Welcome onboard Goodnight007 !
Regarding this award, the young woman was not a native American Indian girl. Marlon Brando did not show up at the ceremony, but instead sent a faked Indian woman named Sacheen Littlefeather who later turned out to be Maria Cruz, a less known Californian actress. ![]() |

Why was Roger presenting for best actor? The tradition is that the best actress from the previous year presents the Best Actor award. Did they not want Jane Fonda because of her political views or did she not want to present it?

Was that always the tradition? I figured Roger was asked since he was the new James Bond.

I would agree that Roger was probably asked because he was the new Bond. And his copresenter Liv Ullman was up for Best Actress that year. Don't know why Jane Fonda wasn't there though. Busy perhaps? Hopefully, this will interest you. There is an article you can read that relates to this topic. It includes a picture of Roger Moore, Liv Ullman and Sacheen Littlefeather at the 1973 Academy Awards.
