> Gold Paint Asphyxiation, Jill Masterson in Goldfinger

As we know... in Goldfinger, Jill Masterson died from asphyxiation after being covered from head to toe in gold paint.

(I read this over at kustomkool.com) - a little nutZ...
Back in the swinging days of the 1960's it was a common practice for hippie women to cover themselves head to toe in opaque gold paint. They believed the lure of gold would make themselves more attractive to Anglo blues musicians and secret agents of the opposite sex.

At the time it was dismissed as another harmless counter culture mania like ingesting LSD, listening to Canned Heat or limousine rides in Dallas.

A 1966 LIFE magazine cover story warned of the dangers of asphyxiation from the practice. Revelers were cautioned to leave a small area of skin uncovered but the hippies were too busy smoking pot and staring at the sun to heed the increasing warnings from the establishment.

A rash of fatalities after the practice was prominently featured in the 1964 film "Goldfinger" led to a public outcry leading to new legislation that finally put a stop to the madness.

Experts agree that skin asphyxiation is just a bunch of hoowee. However, on the show

I watched 'Mythbusters' a couple weeks back. That show is great! I would have loved to see the one about the Gold Paint.

Kimberly Last's site used to have a link to something called the "Skin of James Bond". This was one of the things it talked about, and the doctor said it was false, that your skin doesn't breathe.

Of course the explanation that the gold paint killed her also begs the question, how did they manage to paint her entire body without her struggling while Bond was passed out? I think Oddjob killed her and then they painted her to make a point.

Exactly how did legistlation stop people from painting themselves? They were already breaking the law by getting stoned.

QUOTE (Athena007 @ 1 June 2004 - 23:32)
...one of the problems I have with this sites text on this is that ok yes the lungs handle the repertory part of breathing. But skin does need to breath, which has nothing to do with the repertory part -- try wrapping your hand in plastic wrap and tell me what happens. One's skin can slowly die if their skin is not exposed to air, and I'm sure this would start to effect the rest of the body.

interesting subject. I read some articles about it yesterday, but didn't find the time to put something in proper and understandable English (lots of science stuff).

The skin does breathe, but it's only 0.4% of overall breathing. The health problems caused by a paint covered skin are not caused by a lack of oxygene. From what I read, it is more a problem of overheating. It's like putting the body into a thermos, it can't cool down and maintain its regular temperature of 37

~Mr. Stromberg is a very busy man. Blame Daniel Craig for it.~

I think I will happily volunteer to be the young Sean Connery if they can find a suitable young Honor Blackman. wink.gif
